If you’ve come to Montepulciano to sample the local specialty, look into Informazioni Strada del Vino Nobile (Mon-Sat, 10 am-1 pm, 3-7 pm, Sun and public hols, 10 am-1 pm). They can give you information both on the local producers offering degustazione (wine tasting and purchasing) and the production of the wine, which uses Prugnolo Gentile, a clone of the red Sangiovese Grosso (50-70%), Canaiolo Nero (10-20%), Malvasia del Chianti and Trebbiano Toscano (10-20%), as well as limited quantities of Pulcinculo (Grechetto Bianco) and Mammolo (5%). The wine must be aged for at least two years (three years for Riserve quality) in oak or chestnut wood barrels before bottling.
